School me a little on collecting for a natty. Live trees only or can dead ones be used? What's the best way to preserve or dry?

I ran into a black cherry tree today in the park with a good looking fork on a dead branch that I cut and brought home. It has some checks but I would think they could be filled with epoxy. Is it worth the effort?

That's up to personal choice. All my forks are dead fall, brush piles, storm downed etc... I won't cut from live trees

The forks has a nice shape but ive never worked with black cherry

It's totally dry. Dead branch and has been that way for a while . Our current dew points are running in the -25 degree range right now so humidity is not a problem , wildfires are! I'll remove the bark tomorrow and see what I have.

A nice backpack works good, but I usually just take a Lowe's 5 gallon bucket with me on a mooch.
