School me a little on collecting for a natty. Live trees only or can dead ones be used? What's the best way to preserve or dry?

I ran into a black cherry tree today in the park with a good looking fork on a dead branch that I cut and brought home. It has some checks but I would think they could be filled with epoxy. Is it worth the effort? Tape measure Tool Ruler Wood Hand tool

It's totally dry. Dead branch and has been that way for a while . Our current dew points are running in the -25 degree range right now so humidity is not a problem , wildfires are! I'll remove the bark tomorrow and see what I have.
