Made a new one for my cousin who wanted to throw his utility blade into his bag. The blade is an artisanal Japanese handcrafted knife and is wickedly sharp. Came without any handle scales and my cousin hasn't decided if he wants any on it yet.

I think I have worked out how to get a decent result with my saddle stitch and also how to slick the edges properly...

Thanks for taking a look!

Thanks everyone! The encouragement means a lot! I'm really enjoying craft with leather and it is satisfying to work with.

The little blade is sold as a blank by Ibuki Blades and is made by a knifemaker in Japan using "White 2" carbon steel mixed with vintage repurposed steels and hand forged. It's not my blade so I didn't mess with it but I can tell that it is an awesome well-balanced robust little knife. Pretty inexpensive as well for a hand forged artisanal product. If you can appreciate the rustic nature of its kurouchi (blacksmith's finish), it is superb value and you'd get a perfect little blade to put your own scales on. The entire thing can also be polished up for anyone so inclined.

I recently bought a cheap Chinese fixed blade. Its pretty small. It would be great to follow a similar build for the sheath. The one that came with the knife was a horrid nylon one.

Any chance of doing a step-by-step photographic tutorial guide?

Thanks Matt

Ooh... I didn't take any pics of the process unfortunately... But I can show you the sources I learned from.

First one is for the entire process from measuring and drawing out the sheath, to staining and sewing. This guy keeps it simple, is methodical and his measuring tips are spot-on, resulting in a satisfying snug fit.

This second one is the saddle stitch method that I followed. I realise there are many ways to saddle stitch and and this way works very well. Of course the channel above by "Chartermade" also has a good primer on saddle.stitch if you prefer to follow that.

And this third video shows how it can be done without specialised tools - for anyone who hasn't collected or don't want to collect the tools.

Hope this helps... It always bothers me when a good knife came with a crappy sheath!
