I use a taper ruler that I will lay down against lines I have printed as reference for the tapers I want. That way I don't really measure but just follow the lines to set-up the ruler. Once I have set up the ruler I will cut a batch of bandsets. Before getting the taper ruler I used taper templates cut out of rigid foam board. That works just as well. The template is used as a jig for aligning rulers but it's less convenient. I like the taper ruler.

I have two methods that I use to cut tapers. #1 is a dedicated deal which is a piece of lexan with slots cut in it and I lay it over the latex and cut out a lot of bands all back to back. #2 is an adjustable ruler that I set and lock in place with screws and then cut one at a time.

I don't understand the whole jig thing. What is the purpose of it?

I take a piece of TBG and on one end measure, for instance, 1/2 inch then 7/8 then 1/2 then 7/8 etc until the whole end has been included.

I then take the other end and measure 7/8 then 1/2 etc until that end is measured.

Then I take a straight edge and connecting the dots on each end and using a sharp fabric cutter roll/cut the tapered strips.

The whole thing takes a few minutes and all you need is a cutter, a straight edge and a mat to cut on.

That is assuming that you don't have three left thumbs. Your method is the one I having using and the proof is in the pudding! :cursin:

...because it does what you are doing manually in a much easier, intuitive way? It's not that you can't get it done with just a ruler and a cutter but anything that adds convenience, ease and speeds up repetitive tasks adds to the pleasure of the experience. The taper ruler works and that's why we use it. If I had to revert to manual methods I can but I don't need to with a taper ruler... Nothing wrong if you still prefer to do it manually and enjoy it more that way. To each his own...

:whisper: I'm with you Winnie! It's easy enough with the ruler, rotary cutter and the ball point pen that I already own. I don't need to purchase one more gizmo.
