I believe its cedar. I know I have some strengthening to to do. But its beautiful wood.

Looks like the final shape will be nice...... and I believe you're correct with it being Cedar, judging from the looks of the grain on the side of the right hand fork tip

while working on an new project sling............was pretty stupid of me, so don't think I'm gonna share those details, LOL.

Nay lighter is better don't want to hide those grains.

Amen, totally agree with @dogcatchersito, you want the grain to pop on wood slings, that's the beauty of them. If you don't want a

dark stained piece, or stained at all, and just want to bring the natural grain out, try using BLO ( Boiled Linseed Oil ) followed by a coat of Johnson's Paste Wax, or

Watco Danish Oil............turns out really nice.
