Calibre Rating System

This may seem like a very basic question to many of you but, if someone has the time could they please explain the calibre rating system to me. Is it a direct correlation to diameter in mm or is some other base unit used? Many thanks, Bo.

Easy.

.50 cal is .5 inches or 50/100 inches
.44 cal is .44 inches or 44/100 inches

Numbers that spring to mind

.223 cal = 5.56mm
.308 cal = 7.62mm
