I agree , they are fun. I am currently using 5/8" straight cut , silver theraband , which is something close to the thickness you are using. I pasted some orange stickers onto a black painted steel panel and I can shoot and see clearly where I am hitting. I quick spray of the water hose and I have a clean slate to start over. I also use the clay to shoot wasp and bugs in the garden.

 

Yup very fun ammo. I agree great for bugs. I also plink away at flies, grasshopper, and snails in the garden.
But can also be used to dispatch bigger pest without issue.

Clay is fine for short distance and as long as you don't try push them too hard. They will absolutely destroy property. They will break windows, go through pvc fencing, ruin siding, dent cars, etc. Don't shot it thinking you are safe from causing serious damage or injury.

 

Yes, the only safe ammo for me is modelling clay or paintballs.

 

I switched to clay last year and I shoot it more than I shoot anything else.
I like the fact that I can shoot out in the country and not leave lead or steel balls lying around - particularly when shooting over grass that is to be mowed, steel balls and lawn mowers make for a dangerous situation.
Since I don't hunt the lack of hitting power isn't an issue for me.
I've got a band set-up that flings 1oz lead balls at 24ftlbs and I use that just for entertainment by killing tin cans.
For indoor shooting I use 6mm airsoft balls on very thin taper bands, they weigh 3.2gn and at 200fps they have 0.28 ftlbs of muzzle energy - they will penetrate a sheet of paper (just) but can be safety shot at pretty much anything without causing damage.

 

Currently only use a clay 9.5mm ball or two to test new bandsets covertly in my loungeroom, fired at the closed heavy blockout curtains on the front window..... easy to recover and reuse.😈
