This is the Dayhiker Chalice I made from one of the boards I scored from the thrift store. Looked like oak. Then when I started working it, it really looked like walnut. But then when I applied the finish it looked like oak again! Whatever it really is, I think it came out pretty good. I'm not 100% happy with the finish. There are a few rough spots and it doesn't have the glass like look and feel I was hoping for. I used Krylon rattle can clear gloss polyurethane. Have to wait a couple of days before I can add another coat or two. My son likes it so I will band it up light for airsoft BB's, so I don't have to worry about a fork hit busting it. Thanks for looking!

Very nice.

The only way I know to get to that glass like feeling with the coating is to wet sand it. Between coats and then after the final coat.

If you have some very fine steel wool, you can start with that dry, and then work yourself up to 500-600 grit wet. You might be able to just dry sand the between coats and only wet sand the final coat, but your mileage may vary depending on all sorts of variables.

The rattle can coats always seem to pull dust out of the air like a magnet, and there's almost always bubbles in it. So,without sanding, it will always have a gritty feel.

That's really pretty. Great job, man. Pretty sure it isn't oak, though.

Thank you, sir! Amazing design! I worked on the finish a bit and it ended up quite nice.
