After spending some time looking through the forum for a template to use, I finally settled on The Patriot by Bill Hayes.

Brown Gesture Font Rectangle Wood

I started off rough cutting the frame using a rotozip. After a quick sand to ensure there were no marks from the rotozip, I then started carving out the shape. Once the shape was roughed in, it was sanded with 220 grit sandpaper to smooth out the knife marks.

I still need to do some more refining to the slingshot, I'm not entirely happy with the frame on average right now, but I put some really light flats on it and have been testing it out. With it being my first ever slingshot, it seems to shoot accurate... But as a new shooter I'm not confident in that statement lol

Looks great!! Your gonna get the building bug... It's a very real addiction
True, I myself had it for a while but I can't compete with other with higher quality materials :(

I know what you mean!!! But I guess it gives me the opportunity to support the folk working with materials I don't use or can't get hold of... I have resolved to try to get the best out of whatever I am working with... afterall, it still shoots just as well! I look for rigidity and a bit of a heft but not too much. A frame that doesn't flex and has some weight, just absorbs the recoil vibrations much better and that enhances the feedback for a better shooting experience... i think?

Thanks for all of the kind words, and warnings lol.

Very nicely done! I like it that you shaped and rounded away the hotspots ...most first time builds are left blocky I can't wait to see your next builds!
I think I may have rounded some areas too much. The final might see a touch more of a flat spot where my thumb would curve around the fork for more of a braced hold instead of a grip. Merely to give more options since I'm bound to want to explore while I'm learning. That, and some actual properly cut bands and a pouch. Right now my pouch is a piece of of my old wallet that I recently replaced.

It doesn't look like you've removed too much yet... I think it's about balance and symmetry and whether it feels right in your hand but only you would know that.... I have been learning about the subtleties of shaping with each build and I still like to keep buying as each maker's frame teaches me something everytime. Everyone starts somewhere and develops a style based on their personal preferences and material choices I think...

You chose a great template to start with. There are so many and that makes this a hobby of endless but joyful pursuit!

While at my parents for Thanksgiving, I took some time to do some finishing on my patriot. I decided to not try and refine it any further for fear of screwing it up.

So the walnut frame got some fed-n-wax love.

I then took some maple and cut out two new frames to test out :
1) using a router table to 45° the edges on one
2) carve a different handle to see if more in the palm felt better, or helped with accuracy

I also made a third frame out of an extremely dense wood, I just don't know what it is yet. Once I have decided whether or not I like the palm addition, I will revisit it and finish it out.

Thanks again for a all of the positive words here. So far the only negative out of my stay on the forums has been a frame strike on the walnut frame. :gasp:

Nice work, I have attempted to make a couple of those patriots and have not made anything usable yet... but I learned a few things about what not to do lol :)
