This is a build log of my first build using an aluminum core. The design is the Meatbro by MGG.
The core is 1/8" (3mm) and the Ipé scales are about 7/32" (5mm). I used 30 minute epoxy to glue the scales to the core, after drilling a bunch of shallow holes in the core and scales to provide better purchase.
Before gluing.

Then I used my spindle sander to bring the scales flush with the core, (I profiled the core before gluing)added some aluminum pins, and drilled holes for the binding posts.

Next will be swells and a lanyard tube.

I had lots of time over the weekend, so I finished it up!
I had heard about people having trouble with the aluminum dust staining the wood when sanding, so I only took the core to 320. Then, I taped the core off and took the wood to 1500. This worked really well, and I would recommend it. It only has one coat of Danish oil on it right now, but it'll get more in the future.

I learned a lot, and there are a couple of things I would do differently next time, but overall, I am really happy with how it turned out. Plus, it shoots great! The only thing I am a little concerned about is how well it will survive the oncoming Michigan winter. Temperature and humidity changes will be plentiful, so hopefully it doesn't decide to delaminate!

Outstanding work! It looks like a very clean job... just lovely. Also curious to know if you guys peen the pins when you use pins?
I did on this one. I don't know what others usually do. I don't see any reason not to, unless you were using mosaic pins or something.
