You should definitely give it a try as you get some amazing results.
My favorite wood to do is def Maple and I have one I kept for a personal frame that I call Copperhead, because it really resembles a Copperhead snake pattern to me.

I did another small BB shooter today from Japanese Elm that turned out pretty also.
