A fancy blowgun?
I said it 's not for shoving up anyone's bum... so nope... not a blowgun.

Oh okay.. I just completed it 5 minutes ago.... it's a jute match... a fire starter or rather, a fire assistant.

I made the jute thread into a 3-thread braid. How to braid? Try it out on the nearest girl. They seem to love it for some reason.

After that, I saturated it in melted paraffin wax. After it dried, I pushed it into the copper pipe.

Now I shall test it.

Wow! That's imagination!
Indeed!

A sailors lighter.
Correct!

I wanted something that will increase the utility of any lighter. Butane lighters burn your fingers if you tilt down to light something... plasma-arc lighters want the tinder bone-dry... this thing catches instantly. Doesn't go out unless I want it to. I can see why a sailor would want one.

I light mine w/ a ferro rod. Just fluff the end of the jute w/ the ferro rod striker.

One of our 8 y.o. godson's favorite activities is building a fire in the wood stove in my shop area. Once I light the jute for him, he can safely handle the flame, which burns long enough for him to get the fire started. I make jute matches from old aluminum arrow shafts.

These work so well. I didn't diy mine (I know, I know) but picked this up on Amazon sold under the name "trench lighter" which I've seen a few items sold under. Nothing special here, but I like the size, the flint striker built in and the ball attachment on the end so you can simply pull the rope down and snuff out the ember. These have been great for lighting tinder, I just get a bit going and snip it off right into my tinder bundle. Cotton rope burning smells like crap though, be forewarned.

Super cool guys! I love trench lighters, been meaning to make one for years.
Now ya'll need to make a fire piston!

Ive made three, all gone now, two of them even worked! Ill never understand how the heck native americans figures them out.
I tried that once from plans I found using an old Mini Maglite. It just didn't turn out well at all.

Yeah, id say the bore diameter would be too wide, the stroke too short and the aluminium body would sap the tiny ember of heat away in an instant. Sounds to me like the worst possible thing to make a fire out of. Bummer.

The two i made that worked were just hardwood bore and hardwood piston, 5mm diameter, with a waxed cotton 'seal'. They were probably about 170mm stroke.

I think i'll make another!

That makes sense. I'll have to make another some day, I like the idea of them quite a bit. Sorry, would have replied sooner but the Tapatalk app isn't showing me my notifications today. Curious if anyone else is experiencing that.
