I used to use scrap leather or bargain priced leather, but now I don't use any scrap leather. I have found that it is not any cheaper by the time you throw away what is unusable than buying first quality leather in a weight and finish that you want. As far as what leather it depends a lot on what type of pouch and what type of shooting that they will be used on. The truth is, the better the leather the more expensive. I used the use suede altogether until about a year and a half ago. At that time I got a piece that tested strong, but came apart when shot about 100 times. Now I only use top grain. Like anything to do with making pouches and band sets, there is a lot more to it than you might think. It has taken me several years to learn the skills of making pouches and band sets and I am still learning. Currently I make five styles of pouches. -- Tex
