Hi - I am new to the forum, got into catapulting during the first lockdown and now pretty much hooked, shoot OTT, shoot 6mm, 8mm & 10mm steel BBs on different set ups, enjoy making own bands and trying different tapers & set ups. I live in suburbia and practice shoot down the garden 25 yrds/21 meters, I am doing my best to be discrete and not piss off the neigbours with the thwaking of the BBs on the back stop. Have got a heavy tight woven cotton camo sheet that does not damage but does thwack especially when wet (in Manchester we rarely have a week without rain...rarely) then to catch/slow the BBs tried curtain netting which lasted a short time, then got the green woven "wind proof netting " for around new garden plants or on scaffolding which stops the noise but the BBs soon open it up and the thwaking on the backstop sheet builds. Anyone got good ideas for long lasting silent BB stops/slowers?

I use a few layers of old thick t-shirts and it works well enough. It looks like it works better if they have some slack in them to help cushion more of the impact. I am shooting 8mm steels and it has held up well. I am trying to find a happy balance between durability and impact absorption.
Thanks for your reply Karloshi, I have a few discs and cans hanging a different heights across 3' / 1m so will look for a length of the soft light cotton you suggest to hang behind. The camo sheet i have is more like canvas so does thwack when hit. The netting I have I hang it so the bottom is not to the ground so agree the slack cushions the speed, when I held it at the bottom the steels just burst through. Have to say I am really enjoying this hobby.

Howdy and welcome to the forum!

I’m new here too and have been learning a lot. I suggest making a catch box and using several t shirts strung across a line for a backstop, the more bunched up together they are (with folds and overlaps), the better of a backstop and quieter they are. I also shoot in a neighborhood using this method and it’s very quiet. If you make your catch box out of plastic material like a barrel or garbage can, the backstop material will be shielded from the elements and the rain won’t make it any louder.

Here’s a picture of my catch box made out of a garbage can. It’s pretty quiet and very weather proof!

Sorry to jump on this thread but it is a bit connected.

What material do people use for attaching the targets? I have 1 of the mini leather targets like in the photo Nosferatu posted above. It is the smallest one and the whole is tiny. I tried a thin wire but it snaps off very quickly.
I use 2mm solid cord latex stretched across the face of the catchbox.

Using a wire loop to pull your string through to the other side should help too...

Hi and welcome to the group, I am down the road in Leicestershire, it sounds like you need some ballistic netting or a dense sponge to cushion the sound, good luck
