A respirator is a must. Other than that I can't really help. Just ordered some myself to try my hand at. So I'll be looking forward to replies too. Lol

Ventilation, get everything just how you want it before you add the hardener. And always try to date a girl that wears white socks. That's how you can tell the virtuous ones!!

Early on the best advice I got was to follow the 'PBP' formula for Advanced Home Makery of a frame. There is so much help here on the Forum that it is mind boggling. I'd say there is double this much help on YouTube. I am still learning so it is kind of hard to share all of the mistakes I've made, and sometimes still do!

Sweet! I thought i remembered BigDH200 having some vids on YouTube of stiff he does with phenolic laminates but i figured my veteran friends might also have some advice, it's good to hear I'm not the only one new to this i live my basic boardcuts and natties but i like building and I'm artsy so i thought of step it up, also one of my best friends/rivals has just gotten into photography of knives and edc gear and landscapes and he's really very talented but in an effort to one-up him i thought i could make those beatific knives he takes pictures of and throw some slings in there too lol

Here is a lesson learned.

Friend brought me two scorpions which I stuck in the freezer. Wanted to make one of those half round (igloo?) paper weights. Got the round hemisphere ready .. The only resin I had on hand was Bondo which has a slight green cast. Instead of waiting and getting some clear, I used what I had. Got the orb filled half way, remembered to put the frozen critters in upside down, filled 'er up! I now have a paper weight with two scorpions in it that you might could see if you shined a gazillion candle power lamp on it.

Lesson: If you use material that you don't want, you are going to end up with a finish you don't want.

Yea this would have also been a great tip to hear right before my second marriage.

Brother I can tell you that paperweights and boat anchors are my specialty. Maybe we should open an ETSY Shop together?

I like Aircraft Spruce for their linen phenolic (micarta). Various thicknesses, great quality. You can get it in any color you want, as long as it's brown (natural) ;)

I used Maker Material Supply. Good prices overall. I was going to get them from Alpha Knife Supply. But some of what I wanted was out of stock. Prices are a little better there I think though. And they have way more thicknesses and sizes.

I've tried all types of blades to cut it . Bandsaw 24tpi blades will cut it but the blade doesn't last long. Scroll saw ive tried all tpi blades. The same but don't last long.
But I find the best way to cut it is with a dremmel with a grinding disc on it.
And definitely use face mask and well ventilated.

Making progress on my first G10 sling. I wanted a thinner Topshot so just decided to make one myself. Have a couple slight changes planned too.

I've learned a couple of things. As you can see in the picture below I drilled some pin holes and a pilot for the pinky hold. I thought I had it backed well but obviously not. The pinky hold hole and one of the pin holes got white stress marks after drilling. Not sure how I'm going to address that. Maybe thin the sling past the stress marks after I get it pinned. I think I want it thinner anyways. Hind sight 20/20. Should have drilled it before gluing my pieces together and kept the blowout towards the inside so you couldn't see it after it was glued.

Another thing. I'm very fortunate to have a bandsaw that was given to me. I put a 14 TPI blade on it and cut it out with that. It worked well. But it was very stop and go because G10 really doesn't like taking curves well on my set up. Had to take it slow and wide. So I had lots of clean up to do.

It's all a learning experience and I'm having fun with it while it's too cold to shoot.
