Apologies for the newbie question.

If I want to use thera bands for my slingshot rubber should I get the flat rubber bands (15cm wide?) or the tubular rubber ? Are there benefits / weaknesses to one or the other?
Similarly what colour should I get ?

I've seen one authority that uses only as far as blue thera bands and he's very probably much stronger than I am (perhaps no mystery who that is
).
Is that because anything else doesn't elongate enough or because it's too hard to pull?

Any advice greatly appreciated.

Whoops, accidentally added reply before my suggestion.

As far as Thera goes, with tubes or bands, I recommend the bands because of the easier draw with the speed of a quick band. My favorites are the blue and gold. I can't say how you will feel pulling them for practice but I like both. Blue for me is a great practice band. I do wood flooring for work, so I am physically active with good muscle tone. Even my toned muscles took some days to get used to the way the muscles were worked. In the end, what is nice on the blue, is 2 7/8 wide at the fork and 2 1/8 at the pouch by 9 to 9 1/2 long. The length is relative your draw. I am 5'9' and either length will suit you if you are about my height. Of course you can play with the dimensions.

For the thera gold, I really like 3/4 at the fork 1/2 (3 to 2 ratio), at the pouch, 2 bands per side. I am not a hunter so these are for target shooting.

I think you will find both of these a good place to start and alter as to what you feel is good for you.

Another plus if you use my dimensions with the thera as I got it at 5 1/2 wide in bulk is that cutting it in those dimension gives you "waste" that is perfect for making thin strips to use for tying the band to the fork. To tired to accurately explain how to get the cuts to end up with the thin "waste".

If you are concerned that you may not have as much strength (or more) for pulling you should be able to accommodate that with the altering the widths as I mentioned, of these two colors.

From a relative newbie to another,

As far as thera bands themselves, I prefer either silver or gold. I usually use 10 1/2 inch bands that are 1/2 wide. With thera bands, I double them up. The length of the band varies on your height and draw style. Length varies greatly from one person to another. I am 5 foot 11.5 inches tall and I just turned 13. My slingshooting friends that are the same age as me (Many of which could really use some practice) use 7 or 8 inch bands. They are all about 5 foot 4 or 5 foot 3. If you draw butterfly style, the length of your bands will increase further. (I use the butterfly style) As far as bands vs tubes, I would take bands on a train, or in a plane. On a moose, on a goose. Yes, Sam I am. I like my flatbands. (What a lame rhyme) On a serious note, bands will generally perform better, but are less durable. But, if you treat them well, they will last. Treating them well involves:
1.) Storing them in a dark, cool area
2.) Never fire the slingshot with an ammoless pouch (dry firing)
3.) Use ammo of the appropriate weight for your bands
4.) Don't let your less intelligent friends play with it
5.)Thats about it for now

I've also seen some harsh reviews of thera bands. Some things I've heard are "They belong in the trash", "Ten thumbs down", and some other nasty things. Yet, some people swear by them. The only way to develop your own opinion is to test them yourself. I think that just about covered anything you could've possibly asked me.

Therabands in my pinion are a waste of time and money both equal frustration. The best bands with pouches you can get are from Tex and or Flatband. Tubes to me are weak and a bit sloppy in my pinion.

I find this funny since Joerg , arguably the greatest custom Slingshot maker in world uses Thera for basically all of his creations.
Oh and please explain why they are a waste ?

I would recommend a newbie start with Thera tubes and Theraband gold. Theraband gold can be made any draw weight you want depending on how wide a strip you cut. And in my opinion it is neater to work with than the thinner flat bands (which need to be wider to achieve the same draw weight)

There can be no doubt about Jorges inventivness and his videos are unmatched. I think I have seen them all at least the ones on youtube and they are all great. Jorge is the ultimate in high power shooting. Jorge is Top Notch. Recall I used the word pinion twice in my previous comment and thats all it is, a pinion, my pinion. My pinion is only based on my personal sperience with various tubes and bands. With the terabands for me I found them to be at best dreadful. They are powerful if you multiply the number of them but, accuracy suffers. I did for me. They have a tendency to tear. You must have the right tools to cut the bands very precisely. If you like cutting and making bands more than you like shooting therabands will fulfill this desire to fix rather than shoot. Flatbands are the best in quickness and durability and I believe in my pinion that are more stable if you are speaking of the type of Latex that Tex sells or Saunders. So far with my Saunders bands I stopped counting when I got over 1000 shots on this one set. I have used bands that Tex put together and I purchased 5 sets he put together and these are the 10 pound pull and they are so fast and accurate with a pouch that is cupped to hold the ammo. He does a beatiful job making bands. Also have bands and pouch from Flatband he too is a craftsman making ecellent bands and double cupped pouches. This is only my pinion. Pinions are like bee hinds every body has one. I say go for the thereaband I tried it and I could not make it work well enough to continue with it, it just aint for me.

It is true, you need a roll cutter if you want to make bands from Thera Band. Also you need to make sure your slingshot is well designed, everything is rounded.

If you cut Thera Band as long as the Saunders bands are (so you can virtually not draw it out in full as your arms are too short), then Thera Bands will last just as long.

Of course Tex and Flatband make excellent bands, and Latex really rules. But I need to make my own bands, some strong, some weak, some medium. So Thera Band is my choice.

Accuracy? That comes down to the shooter. There are no inaccurate bands really. I spent three hours in the garden today, one hour to set up my new catch box and two shooting! Was fun. I am no Rufus Hussey, but in most cases I do hit the paper target from 10 meters (I use air rifle targets).

What does make a difference is how you hold the pouch. The slightest mistake in releasing it will cause missed shots. The bands aren't problematic.

Just my 2 cents.

I have a confession.. If it's rubber and its shootable I'm gonna try it and be content.. There is so much out there to mix up the shooting. I have some thera sets baum sent and aside from my Hunterbands they are the only other thera I've tried.. These are way different then my hunterbands.. I love em.. One is red and I could prob shoot it butterfly. It's just so smooth drawing. I also have sets of Latex from Tex and I love them as well. I have chinese tubing and I love shooting that too.. I have some gymnast rubber that reminds me of the ole innertube rubber, that's great.. Gum Rubber rocks! Personally, there are too many types that I DO enjoy shooting and I'm ok with that.

When it comes to rubber I ain't picky.. Guess I'm just a rubberwhore.
It's all fun and each type will give you a slightly different shooting experience..

Enough of these silly quests and searches for the "perfect" rubber.. The perfect rubber is the kind you can shoot well & consistently. Period. Nothing more to it then that.. Try a bunch of different stuff out is my advice, then go from there.
