After a small and temporary taste of success, have my next two attempts at board bows starting to take shape. One in maple and one in oak. Well hidden in the mess that is my work bench of course- this could almost be one of those picture find puzzles.

Ah-ha, I found the slingshot :)
Those bows are looking real nice!
Please don't waste the time, but if you did an item search through the mess in the pic you would find at least one slingshot, six more hidden inside a bag ready to head out with me later, a pile of pouches waiting to be sorted and made back into bands, a band tying jig, strips and scraps of at least 4 different elastics, two rolls of crystal string, several sizes of steel ammo, some clay ammo, and, well, the list goes on. All in addition to a couple of hopeful bow attempts, a couple more strings, some insert glue, a few field points. And some of the essentials including an empty beer can (waiting to be cut) and the coffee mug needing a refill. One box under the bench is latex storage box, another box is band making supplies (pouches, jig, adjustable ruler, etc), other is bow accessories like more strings, string silencers, bow squares, points, and much more.

What is truly a mess is also a peaceful escape for me, and I can even occasionally find what I am looking for and get a bit or work done once in a while on that bench. I built the bench back at the start of our first lockdown and have used it / added to the mess 3-5 days a week since then. Most of the tools are old, but some like the amazing card scrapers and burnishing rod are new in the last year- for tillering bows those simple scdraper cards are the most amazing tools ever in addition to being the cheapest tools on the bench.

I need to check out "The Bent Stick"- thank you so much for the link, will have to order a copy soon. I have a Traditional Bowyer's Bible set from about 20 years ago, my first sorta run at this that didn't last to long back then but have never read The Bent Stick. I remember as a kid in school our library had a few books that had Howard Hill and Fred Bear in them, poured over that stuff hundreds of times to kill the boredom in middle school.

Another one is "Hunting with Bow and Arrow" by Saxton T. Pope.

I made bows in the old traditional style with my kids made from Pacific Yew. I made them as a child also and I started out with an old original Maidu Indian bow that was my great grandfathers, complete with stone points and eagle feathers. My father used to tell us stories about the last Indian that walked out of the woods not far from where we grew up. We used to picnic and swim close by to the old Indian camp and I was always fascinated by the story of Ishi... I read every book that was ever written about him. And today, all of the newspaper archives can be found at digital archives down below. You can look up anything, even family records.
