Oak itself is beautiful enough. I would take the rest of the bark off, sand it, and give it several coats of linseed oil and then polish it with 0000 steel wool and an buff with an old tee shirt.

Yeah....the design you created by what bark you left on makes that a terrific looking natural.

They need to have one of those emoticons that is the Italian kiss gesture when something is like perfectly prepared food.

Thanks everyone for the comments. I'm having fun shooting it at the moment so I will eventually consider linseed oil to finish it later on. I'm planning to leave the bark on as I initially intended since it does make it look different and it provides a better grip.
