Hey all, I have gotten so many different pouches from GZK all different designs and I'm still figuring out what I like and dislike, I haven't used one that I have actually disliked yet ( probably because I'm still pretty new that they all just feel really comfortable in the hands). I'm looking into ordering some of them Superpouches I've been reading so much about.
Even then I'd like to design some pouches that I think would be more comfy for my style of shooting. I have a shipment from GZK coming soon with pouch materials, not looking into using a dye to make pouches, I've read and expirementa on some material that I have lying around and it came out pretty decent for a newbie.
But combing through the forums I've read about some designs having more RTS shots than others.
My question here I guess is,
Is there any pouch details I should stay away from when designing a pouch, i.e. don't make it too thin that the ammo flips or having tapered sides too steep.

I've read so many great discussions about pouch making on here and from Metro but not froma design standpoint.

Sounds like you have been doing some good research, and have a good variety to styles to experiment with.

I tend to favor the rectangle with rounded ends - similar to Metro's tutorial, although I never make as many as he has laid out, LOL!

I like the thickness to be enough to take and hold a shape, either through time and use, or through Tex-Shooter's wet forming technique.

Sayaaaaah - great topic! It seems as though we talk about frames first, bands and ammo second, and pouches third. A good release is just as important as any other variable.

I had similar issues until I started using a pinch pouch. You can find an example here:

and here:

They are pretty easy to make. PM me if you would like me to send you one
Those look interesting, I've seen those but with magnets only and wasn't interested in the magnets part (atleast at this time lol) is there no issue with RTS with this? PM sent.

These look like a good idea to do with some of the leather ones I have, I think I've seen that people heat up the microfiber pouches to get a similar effect also, with the cupping is there no worry of RTS also?

Is RTS with homemade pouches more frequent because of the tie holes being uneven or curled? I think I read a post by Bill Hayes about pouches letting ammo slip and cupping and sending back ammo on the band return.

In my opinion and experience with many pouch styles, a pouch design doesn't have to be over thought or over designed. It holds the ammo, the force of the bands pulling the ammo keeps the ball in the pouch. It is the shooter that mostly is going to be the culprit for something bad happening when it comes to the pouch. Provided it isn't a floppy rag or something extreme.

I opted for "Keep it simple" with what I wanted a pouch to be shaped like. Works like a charm. Interestingly, a simple pouch design is the most used.

no need for magnets, once you learn the trick of loading - the ammo is held by friction

I have been using them for about a year w/ no RTS shots - I did get a couple of nasty fork hits - but that was me and not the pouch

....which is probably why the original poster saw no big difference in various pouch designs.

I like your concern with RTS shots. But if you keep the pouch design simple, sized close to the ammo diameter, and use material with some body, the pouch will do fine.

Material - especially excess material - that deforms around the ammo can contribute to RTS shots, so avoid what Rayshot calls "floppy rags."

Any material that will hold a cupped shape will be stiff enough to release the ammo at the end of the band travel.

I know it's been a minute since this post but, I just stopped by michaels, is the leather they sell there and places like hobby lobby good enough quality to make pouches?
I used to get leather at Michael's, their stuff works fine for what most people do
