One of most difficult things to do when selling band sets is to consistently get good leather for the pouches. I have purchased two hides from the same supplier of the same weight and type, one was excellent pouch leather and the other was no good. Some times the leather from the same hide is good in one area and no good in another area. Leather sellers just don't grade leather for making slingshot band pouches and most won't or cannot take the time to work with a small purchaser. I shoot all new pouch leather before selling it on pouches. I throw away a lot of leather and still a few bad pouches get by me. I have just changed my leather supplier because of this. This is also why I don't sell pouches as I have trouble making enough for my own band sales. Leather pouches are more trouble than any other part of selling band assemblies. -- Tex

I did a fair bit of leather working when making knife sheaths. I found top leather is much tougher than split. Wet formed leather works, but doesn't retain its shape if flexed a lot.

I had good luck with splits for a while, but it is too hard to get quality in a split. The last one that I got was not good and I ended up using it for other projects. It is expensive, but I am going back to top grain chap leather. -- Tex

Bill I feel your pain friend!!! I have in my short while of doing this as a business found the same thing to be so true. To make it even more frustrating the only leather suppler in town recently went under and so I now have to order on line (which you may already do). It's very difficult to get what you need as they say "sight unseen." The best hide I've has so far still had a 1/4 or more unusable for pouches. Even though I don't like them (at all!!!) I certainly know why manufactures keep trying synthetic materials for pouches.

There is no way to buy leather here in this small town, unless you want to pay $15 a square foot at the hobby shop. I have to order it on line also and that is no fun. Why it is so hard to get good leather is most all the real good leather goes to large manufactures. I used scrapes for a long time from a saddle maker, but I run him out of the scrap that I could use. -- Tex

Well over here there are a lot of nice leather jackets you can pick up for like ten bucks:people donate them to charity in UK/US/Europe, and they sell them. They are called ukay-ukay (used clothing)stores.

I use jacket leather their is nothing wrong with it,it lasts it is also light but you do need to double it up for thickness even then it is still thin,I like it more than the traditional leather I even had a request from someone who bought a couple of slingshots off me that he would like to order more tube sets but would like the black pouch as opposed to the traditional leather pouch that he also received previously. He preferred the thinner pouch for better grip. And I have to say I also prefer them.
