Rust On Balls Makes A Difference.

G'day everyone I have been looking through the forums lately and seen many people bring up how they aren't sure if surface rust on a ball makes a difference. In my experience, it 100% makes a difference. I have not had one ball with rust on it that fly's as straight as the balls without rust. I am surprised how people who ask these questions couldn't use a little bit of common sense around weight distribution. Say there's a little circle of rust on one side of the ball, and no rust on the other. The side with the rust is going to be ever so slightly heavier than the other side, thus throwing the shot off. It may only be .5" or 1" off at 10 metres but that will turn into 1.5" or 3" at 30 metres. The more rust the further your shot will get thrown. It won't be super dramatic overall as it still has the general weight of the ball going in that direction. That's in saying that you are using a heavy sort of round. Something like 8mm steel will still get thrown a fair bit. The furthest I've had one with rust get thrown was about 7" which is a lot. 99% of the time I'll shoot balls without rust that are new and retrieve them from the catch box, but sometimes I'll find some in the grass and grab them and shoot em. Hope I answered some questions and thanks for taking the time to read.

Very informative. That post sounded like a lecture from a college professor. Is this going to be an the final exam. I usually dont test well, but as long as we get to shoot I think Ill do ok..

Thank for sharing.
Problem is that your rust is uneven. Better let an even layer of rust to build all around the ammo and then paint the ball to enhance visibility.

Even more: the subtle rust rugosity improves the fly, like it happens with golf balls.

Voilá. I passed the test with honours!

I'll go with that. It's all about the unevenness.

Anyone who knows about Cricket (or baseball, I guess.. which I don't know much about) knows how the bowler/pitcher can make the ball do all sorts of weird things in the air if he/she knows how to use the seam/stitching on the ball.

Air smoothly moving over one side and not-so-smoothly over the rusted side will throw the ammo off target. And it will make the off-targeting a lot worse if it spins.

The question to ask is..... do steel balls fired from slingshots, spin??? I always wondered about that.

Absolutely correct. Also the rust could be gripping the pouch differently.

I soak mine in vinegar then wash and dry them. Think I'll try the paint thing after that.

You know, golf balls are dimpled so that they will catch the air while spinning and not create a vacuum behind them. Makes them go much farther. However side spin will create "hooks and slices".

But I don't shoot well enough to make much difference.

My shots are usually off, way more than 1" at 10m, when I'm hungry or tired. Rusty balls don't bother me at all. People claim they can shoot rocks with amazing accuracy. Rocks, however smooth they are, are still pretty lousy compared to rusty balls. How does it work?

With steel balls so cheap why not just throw away the rusty ones and shoot clean ones. Any bounce outs I get I just pick up with a large magnet on a pole. Don't leave them on the ground long enough to rust.

My thoughts exactly!

Maybe one day I will be consistent enough with everything else (frame hold, pouch hold, draw, anchor, pouch release, follow through, etc.) involved in shooting a slingshot to realize that the slight spot of rust on my ammo is what threw my shot off by .5 inch off at 10 yards, but I kinda doubt I will.

The 1/4" steel balls I just bought won't rust as they are for flinging at what ever I want as are my .177cal BB's, I have not target practiced with them with a catch box and probably will never.

The 5/16's I mostly shoot those for a little target shooting at a catch box and small bird pesting. The 3/8"steel I do target stuff, and pick them up. I did get the 3/8 specifically for small pest stuff.

I used to have rusty balls (OK, wipe the smirk off your faces), but I used 409 on them and put them in a bag so no moisture could get to them. If I was using them for target, I would have painted them for sure.

from one aussie to another the reverse swing mate, now if they were dimpled like a golf ball they would go faster myth busters covered a car in clay and dimpled the whole car, it went further than the same car without the weight of the clay but the same amount of petrol.jeez with the right dimpled steel ammo what speed could you achieve.i was a golfer but injury curtailed that robbo

Yes that's Correct, I should have added that in there. With a perfect layer of rust the ball will shoot straight.

Yes that's very correct its about the unevenness, if the ball has an even layer of rust around it, technically it should shoot as straight as the others. To answer your other question, yes indeed they spin. Usually they spin so slight that you won't notice it but I find if I tilt my pouch my accident the ball will literally curve. Like a curve ball being thrown! I'm sure you'll be able to find answers to that on the forum too.

Yes especially when using something like microfiber.

Yeah cool! I usually just throw the rusted ones out after I shoot them as I have many more and it's usually just so I get 2 or 3 more shots before I have to go and collect the 100 I just fired :D

Yeah some people don't care about the rust but in my experience it always throws the shot. I'm not entirely sure how that works, may be that every rock they are firing has weight distributed evenly I'm not too sure.

Sometimes my shots will bounce out of the catch-box and I can't find them then or there. Sometimes I'll find some a week later and by then they have began to rust. I just pick them up and shoot them so I'll get 2 or 3 more shots before I have to go pick up the 100 I have just fired. :D Then the ones with the rust always just get thrown out.

Haha yeah, it may be to do with that I am young and can acquire muscle memory quick. I began shooting butterfly about 4 days ago. I have never shot butterfly ever before this, and can now hit a 4mm spinner at 20 metres 3/5 shots. I can usually hit that spinner 4/5 or 5/5 at 20 metres shooting short draw. But in my experience, the rust always makes a difference for me.

Yeah cool thanks for that!
