safer alternatives

Air rifles mate, they offer the precision of a firearm and their ammo is a mere fraction of the cost of even a .22LR. I'd recommend getting yourself a spring powered .177!

If you are unsafe with a "real gun", then you will be unsafe with any other airgun, slingshot, bow, or whatever is in your hands as well. The safety rules for all these are very much the same. "Know your backstop." "Don't bring the rifle/bow/etc. on target to anything you aren't willing to destroy." "Wear eye protection." "Do not load until ready to shoot." "Keep your finger off the trigger/release/pouch/whatever until you are on target and ready to shoot." Etc., etc., etc. While the details in actual handling are different from weapon to weapon, the basic concepts are THE SAME. If you are unsafe with a rifle, I don't want you anywhere near me with a slingshot either. It appears that you think the lower power of the weapon somehow makes it safer, and therefore imply that safety is not your responsibility, but is "automatic" based on the power of the weapon. No, it is YOUR responsibility - 100% of the time

Very wise words, just about anything has the potential to be dangerous in the wrong hands - even hands themselves...

The fundamental principles for handling any sort of tool or weapon safely are the same. Now obviously something like an airsoft gun is a lot less dangerous than say an AR-15; but no one with their head screwed on is going to let to shoot the latter without first demonstrating safe operation of, at least, the former!
