Well, after yard work, went back to my favorite local haunt where a huge White Oak keeps dropping its big old limbs.

I was able to get 12-15 ish more forks from the fallen limbs, as well as some more larger sections to be split down into boards .....even got one really nice crotch wood piece, which should have some beautiful grain....most of this stuff is already spalting, so that's a bonus.

I also have been wanting to try a fork from Mimosa, and found a decent limb that was dying.......it's the one with the darker heartwood center.

Wow! I've got to change what I'm looking for! Mine are tiny compared to those! But I'm not allowing for sanding or shaping, either. Basically I am looking for them to be usable as is. I'm going to start looking for forks I can shape, too.
You're going to have a blast working with those, they look great!

Thanks Lisa, I usually do a good bit of carving down from bigger, thicker forks to give me room for shaping for a good fit. ....plus I just can't pass up a good looking wood or brush pile......you should see what I've got stashed in my basement drying, lol.....maybe I'll post a few pics later.

Thats a great haul. Is it wrong of me to feel a little sorry for that old lonely tree? At least your showing it respect. I hope the tree isnt just shedding limbs for attention and to get you to pay attention to it. This could be a very unhealthy relationship.

I know that you will show the limbs respect, its apparent by your natty craftsmanship.

Nice haul there Darrell!! When I look for forks, I look for limbs like the ones like your first pew pictures, limb down with dead leaves. Then I know the fork will probably be dry or very close to it.
Yes Jake, the bigger sections(logs) I cut are still slightly wet, but not very.

All the forks though are dry as a bone

Of course, the limbs and wood it has gifted me will live on instead of being left to rot, just in a different form is all.
Not only will the gift bring me much joy in giving it new life, it will be paid forward to others as well.....that's the best respect I can give in honor of this magnificent Oak and it's gift to me.

Nice haul and that spot has become a great honey hole. I'm pretty sure that I see my next "Darrell Original" laying in that pile of great looking wood!
Yes it has Monroe, but it's gotten to where I'll need a chainsaw to get much more, because it it some hard labor cutting those bigger limbs with just my Corona Razor Tooth folding saw......was sweating my fanny off.
