I like the wide ones, too. I'm in the process of finishing one of willow oak that's somewhat wide, too.

The best part about making natural forks when you've got a fire going (as you did) is you can just toss the scraps into the fire.....part of the whole natural experience for me.

Thanks guys I have to say I love making naturals, but got a couple new toys today that might make boardcuts a whole lot more pleasant...now I just have to get the money together to get a couple of pieces of lumber,,,,another reason I like naturals pretty much free and when I get the urge it's a five minute walk to the woods for supplies.....

I think we're seeing a wave of DIY slingshots, rather than a natural resurgence per se.

I believe it's easier and cheaper to make a decent natural than a boardcut. Most naturals seem to fit the hand fairly well, so they make an excellent choice for beginners and with so many naturals showing up on the forums, it's hard not to want to have a go, even for someone like me with limited access to natural forks.

A natural fork can be a prefect fit for the hand. I have the most fun shooting naturals that are a perfect fit to my hand. A natural fork is not always a simple beginners slingshot, it is the skill of the shooter that is the key. A slingshot is just a tool but it is the skill in the shooter that has praticed over many years that shows you what it can do.

Harp thats a lovely fork mate

I guess I'm just a simple kind of guy. and there's something about hunting for the good fork and working with the wood in it's natural state that appeals to me.

Well said HG. I have a few slingshots that aren't naturals but the wild majority of my shooting is done with a natural. There's just something about them that calls to me. I have only one non-natural fork slingshot currently that I shoot regularly (the Dayhiker ash pocket boardcut) and while I recognise and respect the great boardcuts out there (Bunnybuster, A+, Flatband, and others I didn't mention) I'll probably be a natural fork shooter until the day they shovel dirt over me.

Just so no one gets me wrong I LOVE certain boardcuts, My Flatband pocket shooter, My Wham O sportsman, and while I don't have one yet I would love to have a creation by Bunntbuster, the thing is I'm a old school guy, through the fork, gum rubber lover. (not to forget my brass beauties from Pete Hogan)
But and it's a big BUT making naturals is what I enjoy most, the whole experience from hiking through the woods, to peeling bark and seeing what the wood has to show, scrapping and polishing, to banding them up and shooting a few rounds before grabbing the next fork to unwrap it like a present....I'm not a artist like many here, nor a engineer, or even a craftsman. My forks are rustic at best, simple and under powered by most standards, but they shoot, I can put a marble through a pizza box at ten yards and dent the heck out of the steel shed behind it. They are fun to me that's all that counts, if I sell a few great (can always use the money), if I give a few away to people who enjoy them that's great too, if they set in a box in my closet thats cool too because they gave me a good deal of pleasure making them, To me they will always be just a forked stick and a piece of rubber.
