Slingshots can be as inexpensive and challenging as you choose

I am self proclaimed least accurate slingshot shooter ever. BUT I love shooting anytime I get a chance. I have thankfully progressed with my accuracy. Over time I had to realize I cannot shoot in the recommended stance. The day I walked up to the line and stood in my natural stance my accuracy changed for
the better. I'm constantly trying to find fun targets to keep it interesting. Check out PocketPredator and SimpleShots website.

I would like for as many members who don't give themselves enough credit for how well they shoot, to pick a target they they feel they could never hit. It doesn't cost any more to miss (unless you lose your ammo) than it does to hit it. Don't judge your accuracy against anyone but yourself. Clamp a playing card in a spring loaded clamp, step back as far as you feel comfortable aim at the top of the clamp and cut a card???? If Your accuracy at this point is hitting a can, then good for you. I would love to hear your stories

Well said Tag!! I'm never going to take the slingshot so serious that the fun is lost. I love the POP of hitting a can so that's the target I shoot most, instead of focusing on a smaller target.

Years ago I started getting into Mt Bike racing then soon realized it wasn't as much fun since it was what I "had" to do even though I wanted to do something else that day.

I'd probably score terrible at a tournament but I'd have a blast hanging out with everyone.

I think I could give you a run for the least accurate shot around, and possibly also for the fun derived from shooting in spite of being in no danger of being recruited as a sniper.

I have been having a blast getting back into this over the past year and have been trying to better myself all the while. Spent a good bit of time at first trying to get speed and power up and actually succeeded there. I was cursed at the start by already having a chrony for archery. And when I started going again I was struggling to get 1/4 inch steel over 200 fps. Some entertaining adventures there that I may share details of someday. Starting with wrist rocket I had as a kid that was goes around 170 fps, a Saunders wing that was my first modern frame that I didn't optimize the band length on at first then wore the clips out on before moving onto other frames- that got 1/4 inch over 200 and made me feel pretty proud for a bit. But now have settled on a comfortable setup that has 5/16 going over 250 fps for targets and a potential future hunting setup that gets 7/16 consistently over 220 fps. So if I ever get accuracy up I may consider hunting.

I recently set a goal for myself to try and earn some accuracy badges. I love that this forum has the badges and think it is awesome motivation to try and improve. I have had a couple runs at the 10m target badge but so far best is only 2/5 on target when I have the camera on. And have 0 for 5's running at about the same rate as the 2 out of 5's, so a ways to go before earning any of the accuracy badges. Although settling on two frames and working with only those has helped and I am improving. Even without earning an accuracy badge yet I am still enjoying it and am hopeful that continued work will bring some improvement. It is really fun to know before I release that I have it right and then watch the spinner get whacked or a hit the bullseye. And frustrating that I can't repeat it with the next shot. But hoping that will come. Would be great to get to that point where I am consistent enough to just pick the target and hit it. Perhaps someday.

As for interesting targets to keep things entertaining, I am enjoying many of the suggestions I found here. Thankfully my accuracy is good enough to hit cans with some reliability and I love smacking them hard. Something just totally satisfying at a carnal / primordial level about that. And it never seems to get old.

Some time with a catch box mixed up with strolls and plinking keeps things fresh for me. Great to go for a walk and bash the crap out of some littered cans at whatever angle and distance I find them at before picking them up as trash. A bit more interesting than just setting them on a stand and having at it from a paced off distance, but that is still good. Although hanging aluminum ones in the box and cutting them is also great fun.

Hanging spoons in the box is another one I am enjoying a lot.

And being in the desert, there are always prickly pear cactus around whose paddle like lobes are great targets when out for a stroll. All in all enough interesting stuff to keep spinners in the catch box from getting boring.

I did get a deck of cards specifically for slinging but have yet to break them out or shoot at matches or anything like that yet. Maybe someday soon. Also lots of things laying around for targets when I stroll in the desert, like spent shotgun shells. When I do hit them it is really satisfying.

Here's to the joy and excitement continuing, and perhaps the skill improving as well!

Thanks Tag.

Comparison kills, if I were to look at the many shooters that routinely hot at 30 yards or even further I would totally miss the real joy of throwing small balls downrange to make a bang, or at least a ping.

I'm very fortunate that I don't get caught up in the need to win, or the neurotic need to measure, weigh and test things to the n'th degree. I've been that way with archery and airguns and managed to walk away with a couple of state championships and placing high in comps. I show up with the attitude that I'm going to have fun and if I win that's awesome, but if I don't, then that's ok too. I've seen the people that break arrows, throw their bows and carry on like maniacs when they miss a shot with an airgun. If I ever get that way about something that is supposed to be fun, I've instructed my wife to throw my stuff away while I'm not looking!

I never really expected to get a high level of accuracy with a slingshot, but just wanted to have fun and see where I end up. I'm happy to say that after a lot of trial and error, I'm at a place where I can comfortably shoot at fairly small targets (1.5" balls, dog tags, etc.) and hit more than I miss. And my misses are close enough that I know my hits aren't by accident. I like to challenge myself by placing a 1/2" clay ball on top of a golf tee as a target. Sometimes I get it on the first shot, which is awesome. Sometimes I hit the tee, which in my book is also good. When I miss, I scare the hell out of it! I can usually get it in no more than 3-4 shots.

Now bear in mind that this is at my 22' indoor range. My next hurdle is too turn that ability into hitting regularly at varying ranges outdoors. That's been tough because I don't get too many opportunities to get out to the woods.

Not a chance, Darrell! I'd only make things worse for you! Trust me, Georgia drivers can't compete with the insanity up here. My relaxed attitude does NOT carry over when I am behind the wheel.

I hate driving through Atlanta. I do 75 in a 55 zone and can't keep up with traffic.

I love cutting cans, but find that I need to keep decreasing the size of my targets in order to improve. I like to find anything that makes a suitable target. Been shooting this 1" x 2" brass tag since yesterday. Brass potato chips anyone?!

Enjoyed a nice 30 min this morning with no targets or catch box. Walked in the desert and bashed the unfortunately all to easy to find cans and other pieces of litter that I encountered. Very nice time and great change of pace. One ended up being full and unopened, the soda explosion surprised me- must have been one that the rifle crew missed on their last outing.

mr. tag i'm pretty sure it was you that helped me with my shooting. how you ask? by suggesting drawing a circle in the middle of the target to help with focus. and everyone knows my inexpensive targets, the cheapo paper plates.
