Alright, that is honestly cool! I've been waiting to ask one of the Natty Pro's about the radiating lines traveling through the rings as well. I only see them after a finishing treatment. I see them coming out from your starburst. What are they? Not cracks. Are they beginning of a branch or leaf?

They are the parallel grains in the wood. I always see it in oak. None in maple. Hard to tell I pic but they travel up the fork.

You're also seeing 'Ray' cells that will cross over the cambium from the phloem towards the heartwood. In a cross section they grow in a starburst pattern. Some trees have more than others. Oak and gum for instance, have lots which makes them more resistant to splitting than others like say Maple.
Yikes!! Tree science! Will there be a test on this at the end of the week?
