Starting A New One

Starting another build. This time, I'm paying homage to my first build, while also including some features from my later builds.

Here's what we're starting with. The core is white oak and the laminations are walnut.

I like your wood choices. Ive used up all my oak and walnut on past sling shot builds. They have to get ugly before they can become beautiful. keep us posted on the progress of this little Caterpillar.

This is my first time playing with oak. I liked the way it cut. I'll see how it shapes. So far, my least favorite has been mahogany.

I think I'm about ready to try another template. It's been fun trying different things with this one, though.

Looking good! Keep us up dated on your progress. Looking forward to your finished piece
I am certainly no expert... But I like where you are going with this. I think it will look sweet. Keep us posted.
Made a little bit of progress. Still quite a bit to do. I lite to stop and stare at it and handle it a bit before taking off too much.

Here's some more progress. Inevitably, I always get to a point where I think I messed it up and about the time I'm ready to chuck it in the fire, something grabs me and pushes me to go a little farther. This time, it was the grain of the oak core and the way it contrasts and yet compliments the grain of the walnut.

Still a long way to go with the 80 grit. There are a couple more Dremel sessions required, too, but it's coming along.

Cool, a lot has changed for the better. The core is nice it looks like it could have been laminated. If you get it wet(water) it will give you an idea of the finish color if you dont use any stain. It will also raise up any tiny burs as it dries. This will make for a much smoother finish as you step up with the finer and finer sand paper. rinse and repeat.

Thanks! That's exactly what I do with the water, as I progress into finer grits and get closer to finish.

I thought the same thing with the oak grain, looking laminated. Really neat grain in that piece.
