They may not be round or have consistent density, but if you're shooting slow and close, you should be fine. Little rocks were the ammo of choice for Rufus Hussey and generations of shooters.

Seriously though, you'll end up buying 3/8" and 1/2" steel ball ammo anyway.... plus if you put a decent magnet on a stick you can pick them up real easy without bending over, so they're just a LOT easier to deal with... so you might as well go ahead and get them now!
ONE of the best places to get either is: http://www.trulytexas.com/dankung-slingshots.html you can get 4 pounds of either for $15 and shipping is free! For 3/8" steel balls that's over 500 rounds for $15 total... and since they are totally reuseable, you'll be shooting for months and months, so that's a pretty good deal.

Target shooting with steel and picking them up with a magnet is a fine idea. But some of us do our shooting out in the woods, called "stump shooting" by the archery folks, and are not going to be able to recover our ammo. Cheap ammo is what is needed for this type of shooting, rocks are cheap and round rocks are better.

Yeah, but only because they had access to nothing else, I'm sure they would have loved Perry's lead and ball bearings!

Ummm, Frosty.... if you BUY 1200 rounds of tumbled rocks for $30 and shipping is free, that works out to 2.5 cents per round... if you lose a bunch, which you WILL through breakage and simply not finding them, plus they're not exactly round not the exact same weight shot to shot so you have inconsistencies that screw with your aim at longer distances...
As compared to buying 1024 rounds of steel ball ammo for $30 with free shipping, working out to 2.9 cents per round... every round being the same round to round, won't break and are easily retrievable with a magnet.... the 3/8" steel ammo is a MUCH better deal.

Agreed, also look at their relative hardness and densities. Ball bearings are the most accurate ammunition we have!

you know there is different ammo for everyone, I don't shoot steel (uless you count BB's) I dont shoot lead, why? because I plink at around 20 to 30 feet, I shoot marbles, they're cheap easy to get locally and I like them....not everyone shoots for power, not everyone shoot at long range. If you think tumbled rocks sound like they will work for you give them a try the price isn't bad, what do you have to loose, and they may be just the thing. If they don't work give them to the kids in the family.

Shooting rocks is a 'whole different ball game'.

When I go out to shoot rocks I take a SS that has heavy bands and a large pouch ( If you look at the Rufus Hussey video's you will see that he uses a very large pouch---3 inches wide?? ). Since I cannot find 'round rocks', I search for rocks that are 'squarish' and 3/4 to 1 1/4 inch in size.. Then, after finding the best rocks I can, I shoot at objects that are within 20 feet. A slightly flat rock will still work within short distances, but a true flat rock does strange things such as zig zagging.

I recommend a wide fork for shooting rocks. Because of fork hits, I have had two forks broken, one made from pine, and one made from red oak. Luckily the momentum of the rocks pushed the wood and the band away from my face.
