Here in Sweden people are giving Pianos away for free. I thought maby this would be a good source for wood? There are loads of polished black oak. Would this be ok?
I am rather new to wood so I don't realy know wich wood is good or how thick wood should be? Are there thumbrules that I could use?

Laminates are always stronger than a solid peace?

Oak is a good, strong wood and if you laminate the wood it's far more strong!

I am hooked on 5/16 inch thick laminated Maple. Very strong and light without a finish but edges sanded smooth. Have tried the Fat Bob type slingshots like 3/4 inch thick and I have found for my hand thinner is better. I would suppose any laminated wood is going to resist breaking at the fork even if you hit the fork. Any solid wood not laminated as plywood will break. After enough fork breaks I stopped using solid woods. Dont want to get a fork in the eye or anything that does not belong there. This is my 2 cents.

Oak is very strong wood and I love it. But if it is very dry - like from an old piano - I would be afraid that it would tend to split on impact with ammo.

BTW, this giving away of pianos in Sweden . . . I am of Norwegian ancestry and all of my Norwegian relatives from the old country told me that the Swedes were a little

Hahaha Sweden vs Norway it never ends=) my girlfriend is actually from Norway and I am actually in Oslo(capital) right now=) the giving away pianos has to do with the MASPRODUCTION of pianos during the 30,40,50s! So now if you just go there and take it away so the seler don't have to move it, they give it for free! I just saw 10 nice ones for free or under 10$, and there is a lot of wood on a piano=)

Yeah but moving a piano can cost up to 500-600 bucks, there are alot of places that will give them away if the sound board is damaged just so they don't have to pay to have them hauled away.

another 1/2 cents worth. a tool does not have to be pretty to work well. my slingshots would be rejected because of the lack of beauty and no finish, but, they are very effective. put more into reasonable power and accuracy. let the pianos do what they do and make beatiful music. wood is good, the right kind for the right purpose.
