I was just wondering if anyone has considered or tried using ceramic grinding media as ammo?

I have not priced it yet but will send a few emails off now.

It seems to have a density somewhere between glass and steel and I was thinking due to the white colour it may make a great alternative to using white 'tracer' marbles for target shooting.

Here's one of the suppliers I looked at:

Looks like a 20KG minimum order but that might suit some of the vendors here who would sell in smaller quantities. Lots of sizes available.

I'll update if and when they get back to me with a price.

Ahaa!

Very good find Hrawk, this is an interesting development...

"density between glass and steel", sounds like a happy medium for target and occasional hunting possibly, and it will probably be pretty cheap......I'm ALL EARS!

Please do update us on the price and development of your research and findings, you certainly have caught my attention...

I have considered it, my local machine shop supplier has vibratory polishers. Before buying a sack, I tried it our with fired pottery clay and found I liked greenware better.

Those Tungsten Carbide 'satellites' are spot on. I want a couple of kilos!

Woot! First response!

This is for the alumina media, not the heaviest but still 50-60% heavier than glass.

I have graciously accepter the offer of some free samples, however, if they are not willing to post to Australia, are any of you lovely Americans with a chrony willing to accept the delivery and do some testing for us?

"Hi Daniel,

Thank you for inquiry. We have94% alumina in 10mm,15mm,20mm sizes and 99.5% alumina in the same sizes.

We have a $100.00 order min. andthe 94% is really inexpensive. Do you want me to see if I have some in stock

to sample you? I have attachedthe data sheets for you.

Thanks"

Hey Hrawk,

Just bumping this topic up, it is too interesting to let slip away without further follow up.....any news?

This is a very intriguing development to me, it seems to move closer to solving the ever going search for cheap target ammo with middle of the road weight for those who can't afford steel all the time. Even if the minimum order limit stays so high, we could do some sort of group buy if enough ammo is acquired per $100 to distribute in substantial amounts.

Yes, that may be true depending on the bands, but I shoot predominantly with marbles for target shooting anyway, and the grinding media is apparently denser and in more size options than marble. " It seems to have a density somewhere between glass and steel and I was thinking due to the white colour it may make a great alternative to using white 'tracer' marbles for target shooting."

Therefore it won't wear out my bands any faster than my marbles will. In fact they will be better for them. If anything I would like to try some....
