This is a slingshot made out of two boards of VIRAPITÁ (Peltophorum dubium). Also named ybirá-pitá and cañafístula (in Brasil), its a tall tree, reaching 25-30 meters, found in Brasil, Paraguay, North of Uruguay and North of Argentina.
The name of this tree comes from Guaraní languaje: Ybyrá = tree or wood / Pytâ = red. Id est: RED TREE.
It's very hard, the grain is bloody with variable colors and textures, very difficult to carve. It was a real challenge to finish it and I promised myself never more to work with this wood. Hope you like it.
Thats the good news. The bad news is that this one and the next are the last slingshots I'll make. My wife is embracing buddhism since years ago, and she thinks (and I agree) that slingshots may be used as weapons and can hurt creatures. So, I will move to more pacific, unharmful handicrafts.
