What got me into this

I'd like to suggest a book for your kids if you're interested in getting them into bushcraft, survival, or just the plain 'ole outdoors. That book would The Hatchet by Gary Paulson. They also made a crappy movie too but the book was better. It's about a boy who's trip over the mountains of Canada takes a turn for the worst when the pilot of the bush plane he's in suffers a heart attack and the plane goes down in a lake. Having only, you guessed it, a hatchet, he has to learn to survive and eventually thrive in the wilds.
I read this when I was about 10 and fell in love with the entire genre immediately. That love for the outdoors is still with me to this day. Anyway, a kids book, but a good one and one of my favorites. Cheers.

I also read this book when I was a kid and again as an adult. There is series of books about the same boy. The author has several young adult books about hunting and out door adventures.

I didn't know there was a series of books! I'm going to have to look into that! Thanks kindly Grandpa Grumpy, that made my day, no joke. I loved that book.

Looking into this a little bit and found out that apparently The Hatchet is now a banned book in some areas due to the hardships the character had to face... what an absolute crock of shit.

I believe the next in the series is titled "The River". If I remember correctly another is " Brian's Hunt". I have read several of his books, but they are not all about the same boy and I get them confused.

Thanks Grandpa Grumpy. I'll take a look. Sorry about the above outburst, probably would have deleted that later if I could have. I do seem to remember The River now that you mention it.

I also like this book. I was more partial to "My Side of the Mountain" only because my dad gave it to me and said it was one of his favorite books at my age(9-10). Definitely comparable I think. A young boy runs away from home in New York and learns to survive on his own in the Catskills.
