Hmm..

An ergo design of some sort, where you can support the prongs with your fingers, since its easier to keep the bands square with the slingshot then, to prevent forkhits. I like a medium- to- narrow fork, about 1,5" space between the prongs, you still have to flip it, but its not so narrow you have to concentrate more on avoiding forkhits, than to aim.

I only shoot butterfly, and this is what i prefer, but i think WCDB is right, you can do it with almost any kind of fork

I actually like a fork that is fairly wide for butterfly style.

Those who do not flip should consider self centering forks.

I am currently working on a release design for butterfly shooting, a model that allows you to hold the pouch/release with full force. This could be the route for the strongest slingshot so far.

I shoot "Butterfly Style" and sell the only commercially available bands made so far as I know. I also use the "flip" release but I believe that a wider fork always makes for a cleaner safer release.

Pete just from what I have observed ( since I don't shoot that style ) it seems to me that most who do shoot over the top with moderate to light pull tapered bands...I can't see tubes being as well suited but possibly the thin Chinese style tubes would work . Also based only on what I have seen finger and thumb braced seems to be the norm, but as with everything having to do with slingshots it seems like everyone has thier own style.
